Regional Trends Report – Northern England

APSCo and Vacancysoft

September 2017

The north of England has always operated to a different drum beat to the south. It was because of this that George Osborne introduced the concept of creating a ‘northern powerhouse.’ Whilst there has been ambiguity as to whether this commitment to the region remains, questions to ask include which companies are investing the most across the region? Which role types are most in demand for employers? Within this report, we explore these issues, where some of the key takeaways include:

  • Overall vacancy volume up 2.3% across the region, where whilst activity in 2016 slumped after the referendum, in 2017 there has been a marked pick up.
  • IT remains the number one area companies are hiring for, but for people working in Insurance, this is the fastest growing area overall.
  • Financial Services remains the largest industry for professional jobs, marginally up on last year.
