What is the Internet of Things and How Does It Affect the Job Market?

Aug 26, 2016 | Market Insights, Trend Based

According to Berg Insight research, the Internet of Things (IoT) market will grow to three billion euros by 2021. So what is this IoT and how will it affect the job market?

The Internet of Things (IoT) means connecting many devices to the Internet. Sensors receive data from devices, and new applications interpret it.

To give an example, let’s assume each device in your workplace is connected to internet. You would receive mobile notifications if a light bulb is broken, your stock room is running out of supplies, or your office is using more power than usual. Now imagine it on a bigger scale: electricity transmission towers, machines on production lines, bus stops, cars, and buildings, all connected and collecting data. This will influence lots of areas. Quality of manufacturing will be improved, marketers will use IoT data to target their audience better, and many possible accidents will be prevented.

However, IoT brings an enormous security challenge, that can influence both personal and national security. Having all crucial information held in the cloud means that all connected devices have to have unbreakable protection in place, layers of security impossible to hack.

Development of the Internet of Things influences the job market. The demand for IT Information Security Specialists will grow significantly as a reaction to the security challenge, but this area is already exploding. Vacancysoft data reveals that in England and Wales there were 77% more vacancies for Information Security Specialists in July 2016 than in the same month last year.

Electronics manufacturers responsible for developing and implementing sensor technologies will need more specialist employees. The rising amount of data will also create demand for data analysts, so we anticipate growth in the market for Data Scientists and Business Intelligence professionals. Machina Research predicted that at least one Fortune 500 company will appoint a Chief IoT Officer this year.

An ability to gather and use data defines a company’s success in 2016. The right data from every connected device is a promising way to improve operations. We expect to see big changes in the job market due to the development of the Internet of Things.
