Commercial Hiring Enters More Cautious Phase
The UK commercial life sciences sector is expected to enter 2026 with a softer hiring outlook as firms shift from rapid expansion towards cost control and operational efficiency. Commercial vacancies are forecast to decline 1.4% year-on-year following several years of strong growth linked to GLP-1 launches and broader pharmaceutical expansion. Industry concern around the Voluntary Scheme for Branded Medicines Pricing, Access and Growth continues to weigh on investment sentiment, with many firms citing rebate rates as a key factor influencing launch sequencing and workforce planning. As a result, employers are increasingly prioritising reskilling, automation and productivity gains over broad headcount expansion across commercial functions.
CROs Continue To Expand Commercial Teams
Hiring trends are becoming increasingly uneven across the sector. CRO commercial vacancies are forecast to rise by 6.6% in 2026 as pharmaceutical companies continue to shift towards larger, multi-year outsourcing agreements. At the same time, virtual biotech firms are driving additional demand by outsourcing wider parts of their operations. Pharmaceutical vacancies, however, are projected to decline 2.6% as firms respond to patent expirations, pricing pressure and the growing use of agentic AI across commercial teams. Regional divergence is also becoming more pronounced. While Wales is forecast to record a 53.8% reduction in commercial vacancies, South East England is expected to see a 14.9% increase as companies consolidate activity into larger regional hubs.
Commercial Roles Become More Specialised
Commercial hiring patterns increasingly reflect the changing structure of life sciences sales and marketing functions. Sales vacancies are forecast to rise modestly by 0.8%, although demand is shifting away from traditional territory-based roles towards specialist account management and market access positions. Meanwhile, Business Development and Sales vacancies are projected to surge 38.7% as firms prioritise partnership development, licensing agreements and long-term commercial contracts. Marketing and PR vacancies are expected to decline 4.3% as AI tools automate routine content and campaign activity. In contrast, General Marketing roles are forecast to increase 27.1%, reflecting growing demand for professionals capable of managing AI-enabled marketing operations alongside broader commercial strategy.
Regional Hubs And Specialist Firms Gain Momentum
Among the sector’s largest recruiters, hiring activity is becoming increasingly concentrated around firms investing heavily in commercial transformation and product expansion. Johnson & Johnson is forecast to increase vacancies 14.5% following continued investment into innovative medicines and commercial technology functions. Elsewhere, IQVIA is expected to reduce commercial hiring 10.6% as AI adoption reshapes operational structures and reduces demand for broader support teams. Biotechnology recruitment remains significantly stronger. LGC is forecast to increase vacancies 32.0% following its ChromaDex acquisition, while Astellas is projected to expand hiring 87.5% amid strong global oncology sales and wider investment into Women’s Health commercial infrastructure.
