The rise of AI

Data roles continue to grow

This week I was fortunate enough to attend an enlightening talk on AI at the APSCo IT Forum. With that, key takeaways which are worth thinking through include:

  • Where the applied use case is clearest, AI is the furthest in its advancement. In healthcare 90% of hospitals in the USA now are integrating AI, similarly, in the defence industry integration is also happening at a frightening pace. Interestingly, Financial Services is behind the curve.
  • With that, at an applied level across most businesses, there are still discussions around how AI should be used, and mostly, there is yet to be a clearly defined AI strategy. As this starts to manifest, the commercial applications of AI will grow exponentially.
  • The growth of IoT and the fact that businesses are pivoting to a data first business model, means increasing efforts are being placed on how to ensure data validity and integration. The challenge being that currently AI models if given insufficient or inaccurate data, can give wildly inaccurate projections which at worst leads to a flawed business strategy.
  • Finally, the power consumption challenges of AI are real. And as the amount of data continues to grow, the infrastructure requirements will do so also. There may be a way though to replicate the DeepSeek method, which is less computationally intensive, similarly, next generation hardware coming online is up to five times more powerful.

Looking at how this is manifesting in vacancies, data roles continue to grow, both in London and across the regions, and the forecast is for this to continue. Similarly, data expertise is becoming ever more a requirement for non technical roles, for example digital marketing people are increasingly expected to be able to handle data for what they do.

Finally, the growth of start-ups in AI is surreal, and given the slow pace of industry in adopting AI, the potential for disruption is significant. This is a topic we will be looking at, at our upcoming AI Disruption Breakfast on July 1. If you would like to attend, register here:
